Lukashenko Condemns Lithuania’s Border Closure Plans
The announcement came after Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene revealed on Monday that the country plans to shut its border with Belarus indefinitely and shoot down any balloons crossing its airspace, following four such incidents within a single week.
Speaking at the 3rd International Conference on Eurasian Security in Minsk, Lukashenko stated that the decision was expected not only by Belarus but also by its “opponents.”
“This was precisely the goal some of our neighbors had in mind when they pulled off this crazy border closure scam. And the pretext they came up with was absurd—balloons. Even for a small country like Lithuania, this is trivial,” Lukashenko said, according to a news agency.
He warned that Belarus will respond “as best we can” to attempts aimed at creating “overwhelming military superiority” along its borders, as well as to initiatives meant to weaken the country’s economy and “subjugate Minsk to someone else’s will.”
On the subject of relations with Western countries, Lukashenko asserted that Belarus does not see itself as responsible for the deterioration of ties but remains open to collaboration in pursuit of peace.
Furthermore, he dismissed claims that Belarus is exploiting migration as a tool and characterized sanctions imposed on Minsk as “a noose around the neck of the Belarusian people.”
